For those who Sail. New, Rebellious & Useful Sailing Apps
Sailing is a long established sport which many have come to love. Within any long established sports and past-times come traditions. These exist often due to necessity or because someone said that is how it should be.
We’re going to be covering people and companies who are challenging that status quo starting with two apps. The first is our own which aims at disrupting that age old log book. The second which helps you find berths without needing to pray there’s one waiting for you when you get there.
Saild Sailing Log Book
Cost: Free App, Free & paid online accounts
Released: January 2012
Platform: iPhone/iPad (Android Planned)
Category: Navigation
If you’re the sort of person who likes to be able to blow away your friends with your weekends adventures and help keep those now slightly hazy memories of where you’ve been sailing a little clearer, then this might be for you. It’s a simple app which logs your sailing trips for you.
It logs the distance and exact track of where you’ve been sailing. It then takes the gps track along with any photos you take on the way, the windspeed range and any notes you add and uploads them to an online log book keeping your trip, memories and notes safe.
An added bonus is the fact it will run in the background to any of your other sailing apps meaning that you can still look at charts, tides and so on and keep a nice log. The app is currently free to download and you can create a free account to get started. If you find it useful you can upgrade to a pro account which brings a number of benefits.

The Waypoint
Cost: Free to book, Paid to advertise/manage
Released: December 2010
Platform: Site works with most smartphones
Category: Marinas
Described as ‘The laterooms.com for boats’, Waypoint allows you to book marinas in the same way you book hotel rooms, online and securely. It’s really a little bit of a revolution, rather than having to wait until you get to your destination (as often marinas won’t take advanced bookings), you can secure your spot ensuring that you and your friends are at your favourite marina.
That however is not the best bit. If you are a boat owner then The Waypoint allows you to rent out your privately owned berth when you’re not using it. This will more than likely be on the weekend when marina berths are at a premium. So while you’re off to your favorite spot someone you can recoup some of those usually expensive mooring charges.
Overall this gives everyone a good deal, marina owners can take online bookings, boaters can find moorings easier and berth owners can get some cash back. We like.
